The Muscles that Cause Low Back Pain
After working for 18 years with individuals who have been injured in automobile and work-related accidents, and also with athletes from beginner up through amazing endurance levels, I've seen every type of injury imaginable. However, one injury stands out above all other - low back pain!
It has been my experience that people are often looking in the wrong place to find the source of low back pain, and yet working on two muscles alleviates the pain quickly.
The two muscles are the "iliopsoas" and the "quadriceps." The iliopsoas muscle originates on the front side of your lumbar vertebre, and when they contract they enable you to bend over, lift your leg, or sit down. However, when they are shortened due to repetitive strain injury, they pull your lumbar vertebre forward and down, and you have pain in your low back. The second muscle group is the quadriceps, the muscles that form the front of your thigh. It's a bit complicated to explain in a short message here on this blog, however you can read the details in Muscles - A Logical Cause of Back Pain.
The important thing is, you frequently can reverse low back pain, without surgery or potentially harmful drugs. This blog has been designed to help people help themselves. Within the restrictions of time and space, I look forward to working with you, the reader, to find and eliminate pain.

Hello Julie, I have been directed to this site from Julstro/Google. Just need some advice in choosing one of your books online at Julstro.com. I have had a laminectomy (L5/S1) in Jan/05, foot surgery in Dec/06, another foot surgery in Nov/07. I am recovering extremely well from the foot surgery - but experiencing lots of low back pain. I have received several treatments - chiro, acupuncture, and now body work/massange (NMT). The NMT work seems to help, but only temporarily - getting a 90 min treatment every week. I have bought every book know to man to help me understand through stretching or trigger point how to help myself. I have a load of muscle spasms (probably from the many surgeries I have had, along with severe nerve pain in my glutes to my the calf area. The NMT says it is more than likely not sciatica, but the spasms are causing the nerve pain. I employ using heating pads (moist heat), along with warm baths - all temporary. I feel good when I am walking, but exasperated by sleeping/sitting. I have read some of your articles - I do have severe pain in the morning and very difficult for me to bend from the hips to pick anything up. I really need to know which one of your books that would give me the knowledge to use the appropriate stretching - I sure hope this gets better as this has been going on for about 6 months. Look forward to hearing from you - much exasperrated and getting impatient!
Lower back pain is usually a short-term condition lasting from one day to two weeks. The majority of lower back pain is the result of an injury or overuse of muscles but can be caused by conditions like arthritis. It can be caused by injuries from regular activities like housework and gardening or may be the result of trauma from car accidents or serious falls.
